Comments by Dr. Bowen in reference to techno-babble in defense of aspartame by one Dr. Paul Spiers, onetime opponent come fully-employed PRO-aspartame "scientist". ----------------- 07-21-2000 In discussing Dr. Paul Spiers defense of his study on aspartame (funded by Monsanto) to Lancet the subject of pseudo science arose. Dr. Bowen's comments were so humorous I typed them up and got his permission to publish. Dr. Bowen said: "From the time that the Carter Administration FDA Director successfully sought criminal charges before a full hearing of the United States Congress to the present time there has been a flood of science, falsely so called, to try and blind professionals and mislead the public to keep Nutrasweet consumption up. This would be equivalent to a scientist before the flood explaining to the layman about the creeping things and animals boarding the ark. (Genesis 6:14) '"Why" he said, "this is simply an inane propulsion of the animal kingdom animated by the supreme activity of the subconscious mind and superinduced by posterior spheres of cerebral afterglow: sensitizing every scintilla of the corporeality of the brute creation, this affecting a translocation of their materialistic concepts to more salubrious environments."' They had the assurance they had been reassured by intellectual sophisticates. This takes us back to the 50's when the tobacco industry controlled the press through their political and monetary influence and they used handsome cowboys to convince the public tobacco use was in fact salubrious. Eventually the victimized public came to the realization that any coward can give up a smoking. It takes a real man to face lung cancer. So the public today is being urged to ignore the overwhelming flood of information that advises them to stay away from aspartame in every form. This tremendous adverse public experience, the political and epidemiological history of the agent and the straight forward applied biochemistry of aspartame and its derivatives speak for themselves on the aspartame issue. To continue to consume aspartame in the face of all this because of the pseudo scientists is like talking to Mr. Ed and thinking you had a real conversation." James Bowen, M.D. (Mr. Ed is a horse "comedian" who was made to appear to talk like a man on TV by that name.)
