Back in 1992 when the Nutrasweet company held the sole patent on aspartame they noted that it was in around 5000 products. That year their patent expired and today, after seven years of "good growth", they still mention only 6000 products. However, don't expect any company to list their clients so that competitors can plunder their business. In June of 1996 the FDA quietly told the manufacturers (without telling the press or the people) that all restrictions were being lifted such that aspartame could be used just like sugar... even in heated and baked goods where the higher temperatures hastened the breakdown into around a dozen other substances. The two worst are methanol into formaldehyde (a toxic poison and known carcinogen)... and phenylalanine into diketopiperazine (DKP)... a known tumor agent. Consider anything advertised as "sugar free" or "zero calorie" as suspect. Another perhaps equally poorly tested sweetener is acesulfame- k which is often teamed with aspartame. If the manufacturer is honest, and complies with the FDA mandate (many don't, with total impunity), there should be a warning "PHENYLKETONURICS: Contains phenylalanine". However, look over Bayer's new Cherry Alka-seltzer and you will find nothing on those huge double-wafer packets. It is on the box, or at the end of an informational insert that few people ever read. Shoney's restaurant has aspartame in their apple pie where the natural tartness masks the formaldehyde. When asked why they no longer used it in their strawberry and other pies their answer was simple and telling: "because they didn't sell well". Compiling a list of these products is an impossible task.... for anyone, because this once-upon-a-time peptic ulcer medicine "candidate" come "safe food additive" has no tracking or reporting requirements as do OTHER drugs.
