Sometimes you just need to be reminded why you love to do the things you do. This past weekend, the RWA was in town, and wow, I’d forgotten how great it felt to sync with like minds. And I spent the entire weekend with one of my favorite people on the face of the earth – my agent – she’s always believed in me and has remained my greatest advocate. And isn’t that what RWA is all about? Connecting with fellow writers who inspire you to keep on typing, despite that life has a way of dragging you out of your favorite desk chair?
Note to self: Download RWA registration form. Now. Done!
Years ago, in St. Louis, my then 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter joined me for the yearly RWA conference. They weren’t quite as thrilled by the prospect of attending seminars and networking with other romance writers, editors and publishers as I was; so they spent their time at the zoo with dad. But that night, as my son stood in line with his dad and his sister, waiting for a dinner table at the very crowded Adam’s Mark restaurant, my son marveled at the fact that that so many women could come together in one place.
His dad commented, “Looks like it’ll be awhile, kids. They weren’t prepared for so many people.”
My young son shook his head and replied, with the wisdom God only imparts to the very young, “I guess they should have believed it when 5,000 women said they were coming to dinner, huh, dad?”
Yes, they should have. We are dedicated. We’re women. And if we say we’re going to do something. By God, we’re going to do it.
I’ll see everyone next year at the RWA in gorgeous San Fran!
