Serenade to a Friend
I wrote this many years ago (1989 to be exact). My poetry is not something I ever share – ever. It’s intensely personal and mostly horrid stylistically. It was my way of working through… issues. I wrote this during a phase when I was into Emerson and Longfellow. Today seemed the right time to share it with a handful of friends (and family) that I’m thankful for. I love you guys. This is my Valentine’s gift to you… my friends.
“Friend or foe?”
I once didst ask
When thee I first didst meet.
Though didst reply, “Friend!”
“Would foe come
With heart in hand
And love so pure to
Bestow upon thee?”
Still, the head did not believe
It just could not conceive
Thou wast a friend indeed
(But I wast a friend in need).
Year after year, thou stayed
Growing nearer to the heart
Further from the head
Dearer to the heart.
One day, it seemed
The head gave in
And joined
The heart within
Still…
One question burned
Within the heart
And echoed in the head.
Once more I dared to ask,
“How didst thou dare of me befriend?
I have such a fickle head
Untrusting and bitter head.”
“Tis simple!”
Thou didst reply
“The head I could do without
But from the heart I could never part.”
“I wast a friend in need, and thy heart
wast a friend indeed.
Thou hast such a steady heart… a trusting
and tender heart…a faithful and loving heart.”
New (& Old) Photos!
Who doesn’t love to look at photos? It’s the first place I head to on my friend’s blogs, so I figured I’d share a few of mine – a few ancient ones as well as a few recent. There’s even one of me at my very first book signing. Enjoy!
