Re:  NutraSweet/Seizures

Dear Mr. Gormley:

In an article by Megan Hicks in General Aviation News, July 31, l989
titled NUTRASWEET...Too Good To Be True? is this statement by Dr.
Robert Moser of the NutraSweet Company:

   "In response to these complaints, NutraSweet's Vice President
    of Medical Affairs, Dr. Robert H. Moser, has written, "...
    several well controlled studies have been conducted in animals
    and humans that demonstrate that aspartame does not cause
    seizures or headaches."

Mr. Gormley, aspartame is one of the most serious threats there is to
aviation because it is a neurotoxin, a seizure triggering drug. And maybe
more detrimental to pilots because of the wood alcohol and altitude. Dr.
Moser's statement is a blatant lie!

Attached is information on a pivotal study on aspartame, one that actually
approved it, SC 18862.  This study orally dosed aspartame to seven infant
Rhesus monkeys for 52 weeks in work conducted at the University of
Wisconsin Medical Center at Madison, Wisconsin.  The work was reported in
l972.  You will notice that aspartame triggered seizures in 6 of the 7
monkeys, the latter died.  I fail to see how this proves safety.  However,
it does prove that aspartame triggers seizures.

Did Dr. Robert Moser know this when he made this false statement?  Yes?
Eleven year old Jennifer Cohen  did an experiment on Diet Coke for her
class because she wanted to find out why her grandmother almost lost her
life on this drug.  Some Diet Cokes were put in the fridge, some kept at
room temperature and some put in an incubator.  A food laboratory tested
the Diet Cokes and found that aspartame actually breaks down into
formaldehyde and diketopiperazine (a brain tumor agent) in the fridge!
In her pursuit of truth she demonstrated to the world what no scientist
had ever brought forth.

Dr. Robert Moser wrote Jennifer Cohen because the results of the
experiment were published in the Food Chemical News, and told her he
would be glad to answer any questions.  He suggested she not use the
Internet.  Obviously our web site and many others expose the original
studies.  Jennifer complied and asked him to respond on this pivotal
studies that proved aspartame triggers seizures.  Dr. Moser's answer -
"..the study should never have been undertaken, much less submitted as
legitimate observation."  In other words, the truth was there and he
could not deny it.  He could make excuses but this study is on the
record.  The question was too embarrassing so he cut off communication
with Jennifer:

     "This has been an interesting correspondence, and I have
      attempted to respond to your comments.  I feel, however,
      that any further communication would not be productive."

On Hardcopy on Dec 31 two pilots were interviewed.  Haynes Dunn who use
to fly for Continental told how he had a grand mal seizure triggered by
aspartame.  Another pilot completely blacked out on aspartame.  What if it
had been those two pilots together flying the plane?  Would have anyone
survived??


Also enclosed is a Tampa Tribune article dated April 22, l986 and the
first paragraph says:

      "WASHINGTON (UPI) Scientists studying the popular sweetener
       NutraSweet provided Food and Drug Administration officials
       with data Monday on 86 persons who said they suffered
       epileptic like seizures after consuming the substance."

Dr. Wurtman of MIT mentioned in the article has written several reports
on the phenylalanine in aspartame.  It lowers the seizure threshold of
the brain and depletes serotonin.

Greg Gordon did an 8 month investigation on NutraSweet for UPI and he
interviewed Dr. Wurtman.  This quote is from his investigation dated
10/13/87:

"Wurtman, who quit his job as a Searle consultant and became a vocal
NutraSweet opponent, said he had been contacted by more than 200 persons
who suspect they suffered seizures as a result of NutraSweet use.  He said
Dr. Gerald Gaull, a Searle Vice President, visited his laboratory in l985
and threatened to veto funding by ILSI, the Washington based tax exempt
foundation for his planned study into whether NutraSweet changes brain
chemistry, lowering some humans seizure threshold.

Gaull said . "there's no way" Searle, with one of 12 votes on the ILSI
panel, could veto a grand decision, but he did not deny making the threat.

ILSI ultimately turned away Wurtman on grounds that Searle already had
arranged for seizure studies at Yale University and New York's Mount Sinai
Hospital - studies that have drawn criticism because human volunteers
were given aspartame only once or twice.

Wurtman said he now is tapping his laboratory's budget, which is extremely
limited, slowing progress on his own studies.  Aspartame may be a serious
health hazard, he said. 'It's critically important that high quality
research now be done to assess this hazard.'  In his letter to the AMA
Journal, Pardridge said no one has fully researched the degree to what
aspartame raises phenylalanine levels in the brain, and, and if so, what
the possible effects are.  He said in an interview that after he raised
questions about the sweetener's effects on children, ILSI rejected his two
grant proposal in l985.  Last year, he said, Gaull pressed him at a
conference in Colorado to prove that phenylalanine - one of 21 amino acids
- causes brain damage."  10/13/87 UPI

The paper is very long and exposes the coverup.  The FDA's OWN REPORT of
92 documented symptoms shows four different types of seizures triggered by
aspartame.  Dr. Wurtman has worked on both sides but his papers, two of
which are enclosed, stand to report the dangers.

Also enclosed is a copy of a letter from William Reed of Pullman, Michigan
who almost lost his life to the seizures triggered by aspartame.  On the
reverse side is a letter from his physician admitting that when he got off
of aspartame the seizures stopped.

In l985, Senator Howard Metzenbaum, wrote a bill to put a warning on
aspartame for pregnant women and infants. Since the original studies
had been a target for an indictment for fraud that was never carried out
because two U.S. Prosecutors switched sides and went to work for Searle's
law firm defending the case, the bill would have required independent
studies on aspartame by the National Institute of Health.  By this time,
Monsanto had bought Searle and their heavy lobbying prevented the bill
from ever getting out of committee. One of the studies was on aspartame's
relationship to seizures.

There has always been resistance on replicating the original studies.
Could it because they had already been replicated and the manufacturer
knew what would be shown?  Attached is an affidavit from a translator who
says studies were replicated in other countries and she and a physician
translated them into English.  Within 18 months subjects were dropping out
with seizures and brain tumors!!!  She said the study showed the damage to
the central nervous system and that it hardened the synovial fluids.
She said two people died under mysterious circumstances.  The studies were
never published and she says she has had to live with the fact that
aspartame is a killer and the manufacturer knew it all along from these
studies.

The FAA has said they can't do anything until the FDA does.  A Board of
Inquiry said not to approve aspartame and Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes over-ruled
that Board, and then went to work for the manufacturer's PR firm,
Burson-Marstellar who has been exposed in the new book TOXIC SLUDGE IS
GOOD FOR YOU!  Senator Metzenbaum told me by phone that he told Dr. David
Kessler of the FDA that aspartame should never have been approved and the
case should be reopened.  Instead Dr. David Kessler gave blanket approval
to aspartame in June, l996 and then jumped ship!

An ambulance driver told me: "Where are all the seizures coming from, we
constantly pick up people having seizures."  You're talking about over 100
million people using this deadly seizure triggering drug that changes the
brain chemistry.

Case histories flow in daily of the sick and dying on this dangerous
toxin. We have petitioned the FDA to recall aspartame (marketed as
NutraSweet/Equal,Spoonful, etc.) from the worldwide market and asked
Attorney General Janet Reno to do a full investigation.  Also enclosed is
a position paper on how aspartame causes cardiac problems.  One pilot
reporting these serious symptoms said another pilot with them has now
died.

It is time to stop the insanity!  The evidence is attached that aspartame
is a literal poison.  Dr. H. J. Roberts (world expert on aspartame) wrote
in the October 14, l989 issue of The Palm Beach Post:  "Several recent
plane accidents underscore the need for further inquiry into a heretofore
neglected cause of pilot and driver error, confusion and aberrant behavior
caused by products containing aspartame (NutraSweet).  For example, did
the co-pilot who inadvertently hit the disengage button before the recent
US Air jet accident and then acted "irrational" ingest an aspartame diet
soda or coffee sweetened with an aspartame tabletop sweetener"..

Please publish this information in your magazine and tell pilots to send a
self-addressed envelope with 4 stamps for a pilot packet, to

Dr. Roberts is publishing three more books in the near future, and one of
them has to do with the worldwide plague of Aspartame Disease.  Operations
of Mission Possible are now in many countries of the world warning all
consumers off this toxin.

If airlines would not give a pilot neurotoxin pills with wood alcohol
before flight, they shouldn't allow them to consume this neurotoxin with
methanol orally in the air.  Help us to help you assure the safety of
flight crew and passengers by getting this information in the hands of
pilots.  Our lives are in their hands!!

P.S.  On 60 Minutes on Dec 29, l996, an expose on aspartame and brain
tumors, it was admitted that out of 90 INDEPENDENT studies 83 showed
problems with aspartame.  Enclosed also are Current Bibliographies In
Medicine, Adverse Effects of Aspartame put out by the U.S. Department of
Health & Human Services, National Institutes of Health that goes into
headaches triggered by aspartame.  Also, Dr. Roberts position paper on
this subject.  Dr. Moser should be exposed for his statements that damage
the true facts regarding seizures and headaches triggered by aspartame.
